Crowded Charge in Biological Ion Channels
نویسندگان
چکیده
Biological ion channels are proteins that conduct ions across lipid membranes that are otherwise impermeable to them. Modern theories of electrolyte solutions that include the finite size of the ions has been shown to be a very successful method for modeling ion channels and we continue that work here. We consider a model of ion flux through a calcium-selective ion channel and calculate the components of the chemical potential using density functional theory of electrolyte solutions. For different bath ion concentrations of K and Ca current/voltage curves are computed and the three components of the chemical potentials of the ions are examined.

Ion channels are proteins with a hole down their middle that control a vast range of biological function in health and disease. Selectivity is an important biological function determined by the open channel, which does not change conformation on the biological time scale. The challenge is to predict the function-the current of ions of different types and concentrations through a variety of chan...

Abstract: In order to improve the thermal management system for cooling an electric vehicle battery pack, the thermal performance of the battery pack in two states of charge and discharge in different working conditions by using a copper sheath around the batteries and a copper sheath, as well as a stair channel on top of the battery pack and using of nanofluid as cooling fluid, has been studie...
متن کاملIons in Fluctuating Channels: Transistors Alive
Ion channels are proteins with a hole down the middle embedded in cell membranes. Membranes form insulating structures and the channels through them allow and control the movement of charged particles, spherical ions, mostly Na, K, Ca, and Cl. Membranes contain hundreds or thousands of types of channels, fluctuating between open conducting, and closed insulating states. Channels control an enor...
متن کاملLipid charge regulation of non-specific biological ion channels.
Ion channels are specialized proteins that enable the movement of charges through otherwise impermeable lipidic membranes. Their action is essential in living organisms facilitating electric signaling, muscle contraction or osmotic stress response among other effects. The protein and the lipid charges configure a polarized interface that yields local ionic concentrations and electric potentials...
متن کاملComputational Issues in Modeling Ion Transport in Biological Channels: Self-Consistent Particle-Based Simulations
In this work, a self-consistent Langevin dynamics simulator will be presented, and computational issues unique to the simulation of charge transport through ion channels will be addressed. The simulation approach is divided into two parts; the first is the development of an efficient model to account for the charge transport in bulk electrolyte solutions, while the second is the accurate repres...
